Facilities And Test Methods

Fire Extinguisher Hydrostatic Testing

Hydro Test MachineIn accordance with the Canadian Transport Commission’s (CTC) requirements, hydrostatic testing is required to test a cylinder’s integrity prior to continued service life. This is performed by filling the cylinder with water and pressurizing it while inside a safety cage or water jacket. A hydrostatic test is required by code every 5 years for Pressurized Water, CO2, and K-Type extinguishers, and every 12 years for Dry Chemical extinguishers. Pyrene Fire Security Manitoba is registered with the CTC and has facilities for performing non-destructive tests.

Dry Chemical Extinguisher Room

Powder RoomDry chemical extinguishers also require a complete internal inspection every six years (Six-year maintenance). The dry chemical room is used to retrieve recyclable powder. Once re-assembled, the extinguishers are refilled with an appropriate amount of dry chemical powder, and re-pressurized with nitrogen (N2).

Pyrene Fire Security Manitoba voluntarily follows the ULC S532 "Standard for the Regulation of Servicing of Portable Fire Extinguishers" and uses only approved parts when repairing units. Pyrene offers a one-year guarantee on any recharge work performed.

Fire Hose Hydrostatic Testing

Fire Hose Test FacilityNFPA 1962 requires hydrostatic testing of hoses 5 years from the initial date of manufacture, and every 3 years thereafter. Pyrene Fire Security Manitoba’s Fire Hose hydrostatic testing facilities are capable of testing hoses up to 100 feet in length. The facility is an incline surface, which allows for the removal of air from the hose prior to pressurization. The surface is kept clean of debris to prevent any accidental puncture and subsequent damage to hoses. During testing, should slippage of a coupling occur, re-coupling equipment is available for immediate repair. This prevents the costly "need" to replace an entire length of hose.

– CAUTION –

Even though a service agency may be "listed," they are not required to have the facilities shown above. Many agencies only perform inspections and sub-contract the actual hydrostatic test and recharging of extinguishers and hoses. Please use caution when selecting a service provider; ensure you know who is truly responsible and liable for your fire safety.
